Q:
can the internet ever be truly neutral?
A:
here’s another question:
can humanity ever be neutral?
Since we are the minds behind the internet and it’s algorithms, I think
this is a valid counter question. Though often personified as its own
beast, the internet is truly a reflection of our society - an out of body
experience that allows us to achieve new heights beyond ur physical being.
Therefore, as long as the minds behind the web remain sexist, racist,
homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and all the other “ists” and
“phobics” out there, the internet will never be neutral.
So, can humanity ever be neutral? The optimistic in me is saddened to
say most likely not. Humans are too diverse to ever universally agree on
anything, much less our views on life. Bias is ingrained in our biology.
(so unless the internet catastrophically defies it’s creator, grows legs,
and becomes its own being, there will always be this reflection of
humanity – that is, if the computer doesn’t also develop bias in it’s
independence)
However, as we all are witnessing, there have been magnificent strides
toward achieving equality through a sea of oppression and hatred. Because
we are only in its infancy, I hope to see this activism seep through the
internet as it falls into the hands of young progressive minds.
The internet may never be neutral, but we must certainly try.
